Default C5 Automatic shift float

The ridged plastic slides under the metal clip and plastic tip below
I can move the shifter without having to depress the top of the shifter. Could the metal arm and plastic tip not have enough tension to lock into one of the ridges which then positions the shifter between reverse, drive, 3, 2, and 1?
I have a 2004 Corvette, Automatic Transmission that has a problem with the shifter. I have tried googling this issue, typically comes back to this forum but never really addressing my problem. I read issues on cables, and a shifter that is stuck in park, etc. My problem seems to be minor but I suspect will evolve into something more unless I pay the dealership big bucks or try and see if it is something minor that I can fix.

bottomline is after starting the engine and putting the car in gear, reverse or drive the shifter does not fully engage. It seems to float a bit or slip out of gear. I can wiggle it and it will engage into drive. I had this happen before and took it into the dealership for repair many years ago and while it had been a while I tend to remember the dealer describing it as a plastic clip or bushing that had separated.

Does this sound familiar or is this easily recognizeable to anyone on the forum? Thank you in advance.

Check your shifter cable bushing. One in the console and one back on the transmission..
