Speedometer stuck pegged over 200 MPH

I have a spare cluster at home and I will see if I can trip the needle over to that side (by hand) and then I will see if a magnet placed anywhere near the Speedo will move the needle.
I will have to remember to bring my rare earth magnets to home from work!!! Bill

Now mind you, I have some fricken super high power neodymium magnets See link:

Ok, OK,,,, So you don't have a super duper neodymium magnet. I tried it with a microwave magnetron magnet,,, HHMMMMM,,, Guess what??????
NO LUCK...
The glass limits how close you can get to the stepper motor with the magnetron magnet! Without the glass, you can get it to move the needle. The supper magnet moves it with or with out the glass!

SO,,, order your self some super high power neodymium magnets and you can FLOP the needle over to the correct side.
Before you give up hope, give this a try:
Have someone sit in the drivers seat. You disconnect the battery NEG cable. Connect a piece of 14-16 gage stranded or solid copper wire to the battery Neg TERMINAL. Temporarily make solid contact to the NEG battery post and have your assistant turn the ignition switch to ON.
Make some sort of communications signal that they can give you to tell you when the gages make full sweep. When the gages are at FULL SWEEP, pull the temp connection off the neg battery terminal.
Have them turn the ignition switch off. Reconnect the battery and have them turn the ignition switch ON and see if it will resync.
My cluster without glass, I can move the speedo needle to the same position as yours and it does stay there.
SO,,, it most likely went too far .....

I amaze people with how powerful the two large magnets are.

They will flat out HURT you if you are not careful.
Anyway, the super magnets are a repair path that you can try.

Ive been intrigued with magnets since I was 6. Use to get them out of old speakers and cheep o DC Motors. Thought they were something special way back then.
I saw a You Tube vid on Neodymium magnets and just had to have some. Let me tell you,
WOW! I was really impressed and very surprised at how strong that they really are!!!
They have some bigger and stronger magnets than the ones that I ordered.

Maybe,, just maybe, one day, I will shell out the big bucks for the BIG BOY MAGNET! LOL!

Let me look on my fridge and see if there may be one on there.
OK,,, as I stated, Im a magnet collector. YES, I have hard drive magnets here at home.
One from a laptop hard drive (small) and two from a desk top hard drive. (nice size) NEITHER ONE was strong enough to move the needle. Even if I put it directly on the face of the speed o face. SORRY.
I again checked the super strong magnets and it will move the needle far away from the face of the IPC!

Don't want you to purchase something that I have not actually tested.

If you take the IPC unit out yourself, it may make the repair (Stepper Motor Replacement) a lot more reasonable. Labor to do the complete job will be pretty high. Its really not that difficult. Removing the plastic face and the clear lens is just a few screws and some plastic tabs.
You have to figure out if spending $35 + shipping for a magnet to move the needle to the normal position is worth giving it a try. It will allow you to manually move the needle without any dash disassembly. That could be all it takes. I know PROOF POSITIVE that manually placing the needle to the position where it is on your cluster, it will NOT move back on its own. Moving it back past that magic tipping point allows it to work normal again.
Then again you still don't know if that will be a permanent fix or a fix at all.. Maybe the stepper motor is really bad. I enjoy having specialty magnets so, its a plus for me. I was happy that I was able to prove out the experiment and it my help others in the future.
Funny story. When I took my magnets to work, I stuck them in my pocket and when I climbed the stairs to get to my office, the magnets found the steel hand rail and it was like someone yanked the E brake.
