Default A couple more silly questions??

When I reset the 1243 code on my DIC for traction control & ABS lights being on and if I hold down the brake pedal while resetting the codes do not come back no matter how long I wait UNTIL I let off the brake then it pops up right away........Is this normal?

Also My security light stays on sometimes on the dash and am confused because I thought if it came on it was the VATS system and the car was supposed to shut off but it always starts and runs.
When I got the car the 2 wires that come off the ignition switch cylinder were cut and wired together like someone bypassed what I assume is the pickups for the resister in the key. Why does it still run nd is it that easy to bypass the VATS system.

I am thinking the car was stolen at one time but previous owner said no and CAR FAX says no also but I guess unless it's reported it won't show up? The passenger door has no lock cylinder, The ignition where the key goes in is buggered up a little and those wires were cut.
What do you guys think? Stolen at some point?

Oh yeah, something else confusing me. All four tires had 30 psi in them and today before driving it I aired them up to recommended pressures stated on the tires. 50psi on the rears & 45 psi on the fronts and now the DIC says that they are overinflated?? What's up with that, anyone have a clue?

Ok, I thought that the cras recommendation was for the OEM tires. I thought that you were supposed to follow the tires recommendation for a tire. So running the tires at 30 psi won't damage them as well running them so much below the max recommended pressure?
I have no problem running 30 psi but thought that may be too low.
I will take your guys word for it I am here to learn.

You can start by spending a little time reading the Owners Manual which contains a wealth of information about the C5. If your car didn't come with one you can google "C5 Owners Manual" and you should find more than one site from which you can download one free.

To start you off here is one:

I have and have read the owners manual but my confusion was whether to follow the cars manufacturers recommendation or the tire manufacturer.
I thought to follow the tire recommendation instead of the vehicles.

Ok, I have been here like 2 days and said I was here to learn because I have never owned a Corvette before and although I have a shade tree mechanic for all my life on my own vehicles and other peoples I am very far from knowing everything and I know that.

Seems like twice now I have been talked down to and almost feel repremanded for my questions. Have I done something wrong on here already to **** off people? Getting the feeling this is not the most friendly forum to new people.

It is like an initiation. Everyone seems to go through it. Sometimes we forget to take our medication , have a hang over from yesterday, or just woke up with a bad attitude: Just have to work through it (like many times I have) and recognize you cannot get any better advice then on this forum.

Welcome to Corvette Forum. You have legitimate questions and should ask anything else that comes to mind. There is a tremendous wealth of information available on the search engine and a great number of dedicated Forum members who have invested thousands of hours and emails to people like me and you. People like 8Vette7 have lots of very good advice don't spend lots of personal time trying to help. My experience has been that most everyone is friendly and willing to help.
Again welcome to Corvette Forum! I wish you many miles of great big smiles driving the amazing C5!

Wow spellcheck changed changed the word "who" to the word "doesn't". Makes no sense but my apologies to 8Vette7.

Michael, by all means, welcome to the Corvette Forum. I believe very quickly you will find it one of the most useful "tools" in your tool box.

Just to clarify a bit regarding what your tire says about maximum pressure. The maximum pressure on the sidewall of the tire is directly related to the maximum load rating of your tire. Typical passenger cars utilize a tire with a maximum load rating of 1500 lbs per tire. (This should also be stated on the sidewall of the tire.) That means if your vehicle had 4 of these tires on it, it's maximum weight, loaded, could be approximately 6000 lbs, in which case you might want to air them up to the maximum pressure. Any weight less than the maximum (total) load rating of the tires should expect to use a pressure something less than the maximum. This is why the manufacturer places the recommended tire pressure sticker somewhere on the car. Typically in the driver's door jam.

You are not alone by a long shot in your misimpression of what the max tire pressure is telling you. More folks than you'd like to imagine make this mistake. Many of them with more experience than yourself.

Good luck with you Corvette. I think you'll find over time that it is one pretty terrific sports car.

Thanks Gusto14, I appreciate the input. I loverd the tire pressure to 35 all the way around. Rides much better.

I would advise you to go down to 30 or if you like it a little firmer, then 32 psi. Don't forget, when you drive a while, the tires will warm up, the 30 will become 33-34 at least, and the 32 will become 35-36 psi. If you start out at 35 you will warm up to 38-40 on the road and you will wear out the centers of your tires faster and have to replace them sooner.
Check your pressures when you first start out (you have to drive 30 sec to a minute before the pressures register on the DIC), and then check them again 5-10 miles later, you'll see what I mean.

Michael, when you get a few minutes, you might want to check out this video. It's almost an hour long, so pace yourself. I've owned my 2000 hardtop for over 12 years and still found it informative.

Ok mrlmd, I will drop them down to 30 psi. Thank you for the input.
