Greg, I did not use tis. My laptop and tis disc must be incompatable. I read somewhere that there is a company that can reset the sdm module. Steve
TISWEB is a service that the dealerships use to program the correct stock program information for a particular vehicle. You can buy a 2 day subscription for $55 from the link that Ersatz928 posted earlier if you needed to.
I don't know how useful the disks they send with the Tech 2 are. I know K-Spaz wound up using TISWEB to get the stock tune for a '98 PCM.
I did all of the above. since the bcm was from a 2004 I had to do everything. Yes , I did use a tech II. I am not sure when the sdm id number was programmed, either when I did the initial 30 min on and off procedure or when I did the set the rpo options. I do know that I did not have the air bag light on the dash driving down the road. It seemed to fix all the non comm codes too! Steve
Steve
The SDM ID does not automatically get programmed into the BCM when you use a Tech2 to set the RPO codes....you have to do something else to program the SDM ID (thru the use of TIS2WEB)...your car seems to have magically not needed that step.....???????????
all I know is that everything seems to be working ok. the warning lights on the dash cycle through on startup and I have no codes. (checked through the dic). Steve
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has been explaining all this. I am bring my vette to my local Chevy dyno/tune shop on Friday this week, and I will ask them what all they know about it (if anything) and the process and post what I find out.
I did find a place in Georgia that says they can clear the crash data and reset the SDM. If you send them the module from your vehicle it simplifies the reinstall. I guess the module ID and VIN must be retained. $49 for the service and 24 hour turnaround. MyAirbagsdotcom
Update:
I sent them an email and they did confirm that if you send the SDM from your vehicle they can erase the crash data and reset the unit, and still retain the programming info specific to that vehicle (restraint ID and VIN?). They did not offer any information as to what is needed if a replacement SDM is installed other than to say programming may be required.

Reason: Update
UPDATE: So I brought my Vette to my local tuning place as I needed a dyno tune. A few hours later, when all was done, the tuner spoke with me and told me what he did, etc. I asked about the SDM B1001 code and if he knew how to deal with it, and he said that when he got into the computer it didn't have a VIN in the system. So he went through and input all the correct information in (without GM Tech 2 scanner, I guess he used a regular laptop with the editing software?) and with it paired like that, my SDM is fine and my airbag light is no longer on.
All is well.
So it would seem that with the correct tuner, they can pair the BCM/SDM and make everything work. And it must be fairly simple, as I wasn't charged anything extra on top of my tuning/dyno runs.
I have an appointment in a week to get this reprogrammed at my dealer. They said they can reprogram it to accept the used BCM and it will turn off my air bag light so I have air bags.
