I've owned my 2000 C5 for more than three years. I ran across a fellow C5 owner who wanted to upgrade his wheels and, since my wheels have substantial clear coat flaking, I purchased his wheels and Michelin tires.
My GM dealership service tech says he thinks the 2003 TPMS sensors can be programmed to my car. I don't think this is the case. If I'm right, the sensors from my '00 will need to be removed from the tires, the new tires dismounted and the later sensors replaced, then the tires remounted and balanced before the tires and wheels are mounted on my 2000.
Could someone who's tried this sort of swap give me some clear guidance? My service tech says the only difference in the sensors is a rubber stem versus a metal stem. My understanding is that the sensor electronics were changed in 2001, preventing the newer sensors from working with my 2000.
I've read that 2000 and earlier take one type and different programming than the later ones. Not sure though. I get to find out for sure next week when I put new wheels ant tires on my 04.
You need to look at the cost of the newer style receiver and fobs vs the cost of swapping the sensors from your old wheels to new. Also, should your sensors fail, the GM sensors for the 1997-2000 are more expensive to replace than the 2001-2004. There are some aftermarket options for the 19977-2000 sensors that may be more affordable. I haven't checked lately.
The lithium batteries in the sensors last about 10 years, give or take, but that depends on mileage. If the car is sitting the sensors are off.
Another thing to consider is the sensors you are getting with the wheels are four years newer, assuming neither set has been replaced..
Here is a link to the upgrade kit including new sensors which you wouldn't need, if the ones you bought are in working.
Considering what condition your key fobs are in and what age your sensors are, you may want to replace the receiver and the key fobs and keep the newer sensors. As noted, the 97-00 key fobs and sensors are more money so they could cost you more later on if they are well used and due for replacement. Others have linked the kit, but you could buy a new or used receiver and a couple of new key fobs for a 2001+ car and be better off in the long run.
Just make sure you do not get a used receiver from a Z06. It will not allow you to program the tire pressure sensors.
