I am about to use my C-Tek charger for a third winter. I have always plugged in through the "lighter" plug - not using the direct battery connect method, and it has always worked perfectly.

Is there anything I should be concerned about?? I hear that some have issues with the connection using the lighter plug.

I suggest you have an electrician install a surge protector in your garage panel in case of a power outage.

I had four C-teks go bad on me during typical summer storms while on my C5 and Harley. One cooked the EBCM which cost me $550 to replace. Two of those chargers were replacements from the company.

The CTEK that GM sells for Corvettes has the lighter plug attached, not sure what is best for C5, I did see an article or video of a car/corvette some where that had an issue using that plug.

Isn't the cigar lighter circuit fused so the wiring won't overheat in case of a short? C6miller, what type and brand of surge protector did you install?

Never have tried using a cigarette lighter plug to charge the battery. I've always just use the alligator clips on my Battery Tender Plus and connected directly to the terminals on the battery.

It's easy to install a direct connection for the CTEK charger. Use the large positive post that's under the fuse compartment lid (labeled "B+") and then a good ground point. There is one on the frame rail just below the battery ground cable.

I have that type of connection for my Battery Tender Junior. I can keep the connection outside the hood by the corner of the windshield. I don't have to open the hood to connect the Battery Tender.

I'll try to find the electrician's invoice and let you know. There are two green lights in the panel to let ya know the protector is on and working. I'm not sure if the lighter fuse would protect the electronic from an outside power source. The charger's instructions state it is safe to use unattended, but not so for me.
