Default O2 sensor question for the Tech gurus

This is on a completely stock 2004 C/E. I'm getting P0135 code and Check Engine light. I know this is the drivers side heated O2 sensor. Check engine light comes on after starting and driving about 2 blocks. If I reset it. It doesn't come back until next time I start engine.

Can someone explain why it is throwing the code and why it does not throw the code again after reset? Just curious. I'm going to replace the sensor next week.

YES! Before you install a NEW SENSOR, I would check the O2 Sensor HEATER CIRCUIT!

Each O2 Sensor has a heating element. Turn the key ON but don't start the engine. Let it set for 4-5 min. Reach down and FEEL the O2 sensor Body. Careful! It should be very warm to the touch if,,, its working correctly.

Here is the schematic for all the O2 sensors The DTC that you have is for Bank 1, Sensor 1.

Make SURE that you have FULL battery voltage at the sensor connector for the heater circuit and the GROUND reads proper continuity from the connector to chassis ground!!!

You can read the IGNITION VOLTAGE at the fuse. There are TWO test slots on top of all the fuses. Put one lead in the test slot and the other on chassis ground! You SHOULD see full battery voltage on that fuse with the key to ON.

IF,,, the heater circuit isn't working the life of the O2 sensor will be significantly short!

If you replace one Primary O2 sensor, you should replace both. If you have higher mileage, I highly recommend replacing both!
