Recently bought a 2001 C5. Headlight doors open fine, but going back down is temperamental. Lights go off but doors stay open! Next time around, they may decide to go down fine. Any suggestions, please.
Also, any way to re-set the Twilight sensor to light up without being in full darkness?

Re: Your last comment....if you mean, not dark enough to open the lights, the sensor is on the dash and on the left side of the vent. Cover the sensor (with a rag/magazine/etc.).
There are four bump stops on each headlight...two on top and two on the bottom and they get worn. Either turn them 180 degrees or replace them. They look like rubber or plastic caps on tabs to limit the open and close of the headlight doors.

Thks "140". Re headlight sensor, have nothing on the left of the vent, but do have a button like nub on the Right side of the vent. Will try covering that the txt time out at dark.
I kind of doubt that the bump stops are the cause of this problem but check them out anyway.
It is the headlight control module that is responsible for providing power to the motors to open/close the headlight doors. If the doors don't close then likely the module is the cause. ie not providing the power to the motors. The case that houses/protects the electronics is very prone to splitting open and allowing water into the electronics.
Module is located on the passenger side below the headlight assembly. Suggest that you remove the module (2 screws) and carefully examine it for cracks. Here is a thread by a member that repaired the module on his car:
Thks 8Vette7. I'll open it up & chk each housing & revert. Appreciate yr feedback. Its funny how sometimes they close perfectly & a few minutes later they just stay up. Never fail to open, just closing is the problem. Will let ya know.
From the outside of the car look down into the drivers side end of the center vent. You will see a little hole and the sensor is down in that hole...........
As suggested put something over it and the twilight will turn on the headlights (assuming you have twilight enabled in the DIC) during the daytime......
AH-HA! I see the lil bugger now!! And yes, Twilight had been enabled already. Thks a ton!

Hey all,
Having a similar issue, but with the headlights opening, not closing. Will flip the switch, the lights light, but will not open. Can do it 30 times, then whammo!! the lights open and will close after, then not again. Just started happening a few weeks ago.
Are we talking BOTH headlights will not open?? Or just one will not open? Or left side sometimes will not open but right side will or???????
If it is always BOTH will not open then the problem is MOST LIKELY the headlight control module..... Pull it out and examine for cracks in the casing that is letting water get inside..............
Check the link in post #3 for more info on the headlight control module.......
It is that they will either BOTH open, or not. Never just one (well, except when one of the gears on the right light stripped).
What is the easiest way to get to it. I understand that it is UNDER the right (passenger side) light. Do I have to remove the entire bucket, or is there a different way to get to it?
I upgraded my FOG lights to HID a few weeks ago and took som pictures . I did not remove anything from below .
I took off the bezel around the headlight first , the I removed the two small bolts the headlight mounted with .
Then I disconnected the two plugs on the lamps and removed the 10mm nut on the linkage arm(on the motor) . After this I put the headlight aside and the Headlight module is in front of you , as shown on the picture below . The headlight module is on passenger side , but the two first images is the driverside headlight because I did no take those photes on the passenger side .
Hope this info helps

Hey Oelarse,
Thanks so much for the directions and photos. I'll try to save the pics and directions to the computer so I can refer to it while I'm working on it...doesn't look that difficult.
Thanks again.

Thanks 8Vette7 for taking the time to check the shop manual. I don't have one of those (although I prob. should). I appreciate it.

Remove the headlamp circuit breaker from the IP fuse box.
Manually raise the RH headlamp.
Disconnect the RH headlight wiring harness connector from the forward lamp wiring harness.
With the front on jack stands remove the front fascia lower closeout panel.
Remove the RH brake caliper cooling duct.
Disconnect the electrical connectors from the headlight control module.
Remove the nuts mounting the module to the headlamp bracket.
Remove the module.
Don't know if there is an easier way or not. Perhaps someone that has actually removed one will jump in with additional options........
