02 coupe, 46K miles, RH muffler, the bracket that wraps around the muffler has rusted through and the assembly is kind of 'floating'. Pulled the strap off and it is pretty clear that this was an integral part of the muffler. My question, in lieu of buying a muffler assembly, as it looks and feels pretty solid, are there any replacement straps or ideas as to what I can do to replace this hanger. I have gone through all of the aftermarket vendors and not seen anything. I would like to repair it if possible. Worse case scenario I drop 600 plus and have a new muffler.
Appreciate any ideas and/or advice. thank you.
Just did this on my car. I teach metalshop and autoshop though, so I have a ton of tools at my disposal. I used 3" x 36" x 1/16" steel. I bent it around the muffler and marked spots for cutting off excess. Then I bent the ends so they were parallel and drilled some holes so two bolts could go through- this provided tension on the strap. I welded on a 6" tab to fit in the rubber hangar and installed.
Just purchase some stainless steel bandit strap with buckles and secure the TAB back to the muffler with strapping. If you need to, have someone tack weld a cross tab onto the tab so the bandit can secure it to the muffler better.
I would do both mufflers as if one is broke, the other strap cant be far from it!
If you live anywhere that has a winter snow/ice problem on the roads, It could be related to that NASTY new liquid highway treatment that is being used.
Its either Potassium Acetate OR Magnesium Chloride OR potassium chloride-based material
The potassium chloride-based materials used in the North east is MURDER on ferrous metals and I have seen brake bad backings, mounting brackets, car frames on NEWER cars outright disintegrate!!
