Default Power steering pump pulley

I can't help myself, I like to both tinker, as well as improve my C-5. I read a while back, about the LS2 power steering pump pulley being an upgrade. So, I ordered one from Cultrag Performance, yesterday.

It will be a while until I can access the car, and install this new pulley, as the car is stashed in the back of the garage for the winter. However, I want to be ready to go, as soon as it warms up, and I can get the car out of it's "cave".

I checked out several threads here, at CF, and while they all spoke of the difficulties of removing/installing the pulley from the pump, I didn't really see any mention of whether or not this job can be done while the pump is still on the car.

Can anyone who has done this job, shed some light??

Thanks!

You have to remove the pulley just to get it off the engine, I couldn't get any wrenches Behind it to loosen two of the bolts.

I had to unbolt the abs unit and the master cylinder to be able to push it out of the way and was barely able to squeeze the puller on it, but was able to.

I wrestled with this one a while back - had a fun time with it. This was my experience - YMMV as several here have had no trouble getting this thing off. The PS pulley is molded over that gear-toothed hub which is pressed on to the PS pump shaft. In the process of trying to get my flip drive installed, I attempted to remove the PS pulley using the standard PS pulley puller so I could upgrade to the C6 steel version.

Innocent enough, right? Should just pop right off.

Nope. Thing gave me fits all afternoon breaking the little lip on the pulley that the puller grabs onto. I must have tried 5 different pullers before finally drilling three holes to use a three-arm puller with screws and bolts through the body of the pulley. Here was the result of that effort.

The pulley is made sort of bakelite material that cracked pretty easily. It's molded onto a double-toothed hub that is pressed onto the pump shaft. I thought the pulley was aluminum until I heated with my torch to try and expand it from the shaft and a funny smell emanated from it. Even with this totally shattered and the pump apart, that hub would not separate from the shaft. I took it to work thinking I could use one of the presses there to press the shaft out of the hub.

This is what it came down to - presses did not help, at least with my shaft/hub. had to machine the hub off on a lathe.

Success!

Here's the C6 version that I wanted to replace it with.

Back together finally. I actually ordered a new bearing because I wasn't comfortable with all the abuse the original bearing might have seen in the shop trying to get that hub off. I installed it on the shaft, pushed the shaft back in the pump and secured it with the snap ring and finally pressed the new pulley onto the shaft. The new assembly is smooth as butter.

It appears then, that removing the pulley is a crap shoot.....

Mine came right off once I was able to get the puller on it.

mine came off fairly easily, it made a loud pop and I thought it broke but it was just the initial separation from the pump shaft... I would try it on the car first so you don't have to make a mess with opening the pump lines and if it breaks then you can go ahead and remove the pump... you can get the pump off the car with the pulley installed if you remove the large bracket that the pump and alternator bolt to as seen in Patches' pic above and then you can work on getting the pulley off... I swapped mine out for a c6 pulley after I saw an f-body grenade one on the dyno and took out the radiator and some other odds and ends with it

And if I understood your earlier post, you left the pump in place, but loosened up the m/c and ABS unit, for a "little work room", correct?

Yea, I had to move it foreward and to the side a couple inches. Pulled the pulley, removed the pump, installed new pulley and reinstalled pump Back on bracket

I installed a heat pump this summer and said goodbye to 110 deg. summer days and 30 deg. winter mornings. It may be SoCal but it has it's extremes where I live.

Even though I'm in the "snowbelt", we have extremes here, too. It can be (-)20* here, in the winter, and above 90* in the summer. I have a 22,000 BTU electrical heater, which I had in my previous garage, and it kept that garage nice and toasty, if necessary, in the winter.

However, I had to vacate that garage, and the one I have now, has too much "dead air space" in the "rafters", so it's not as effective as it was in the other garage, so my "wintertime projects" are few and farther in between.

I got the PS pump off with the pulley in place. I believe I removed the entire alternator PS bracket. I was doing heads cam and all that.

I didn't know about the LS2 pulley at that time, so to ease reassembly, I drilled holes in the orig pulley for bolt access.
Don't laugh, I've made 200+ dragstrip passes and no it hasn't blown apart.

I used the LS2 pulley on my Nova 5.3 swap. I have C5 accessory brackets etc on that engine.
Nice part.

According to the shop manual, it's supposed to be J-25034-C....at least that's what I bought!
