im in the process of repairing my fallen HUD. I put the screw in as a new pin. But my hud still won't line up. The mirror needs to be angled more and I can push it with my fingers and it'll show up on the windshield fine but when I let go the spring pulls it back out of line. Unsure if I'm setting the mirror on the gear wrong or what.
Wanted to get you an answer....don't know myself but while you are waiting for an answer, try "google" and try "youtube". They are great sources of info.
Not sure if you got it fixed but Ill post this. I just finished fixing mine. Two things to check. First make sure that you have aligned the teeth with the gear for full travel, second double check the other side of the mirror. After I fixed the "pin" side I realized that there was also a grommet missing on the other side. There is a fix in the HUD thread, but I used a standard grommet from a harbor Freight grommet box. If you need the size I can provide.
It's in the setting on the gear teeth, test, adjust, repeat. I had to do mine about 5 times to get the right tilt. I think the repair thread says something about marking the spot where the motor gear and the teeth on the mirror mate so you know where to put the mirror... I didn't do that and it sounds like you are past that point... If out of alignment, lift the mirror off the gear (while leaving everything connected) and swing the teeth front or back. Plug in and test. Determine if you went the wrong way or the right way but not enough...
I agree with the guys who suggested the gears aren't meshing. If they were meshing properly, the spring wouldn't be able to pull the mirror back when you let go.
Now the proper tilt once installed is a different issue. When I pulled my mirror out a couple weeks ago to make this repair, I didn't note it's position. What I did instead was pushed the motor to one end of it's travel (highest tilt angle) then placed the mirror in on the gears at it's highest angle possible. I wasn't sure if this would work when I did it, but it did. I certainly tested it though before I put the dash back in.
