#2 is very likely. Based on what I can see in the intake tract, anything that's getting in that cylinder and igniting when the spark plug fires, would blow back into the intake because the valve is not sealing against the head.

The carnage that I have discovered so far. Hopefully will have time to get the heads off tomorrow.

Well... new piston, and new heads are in order... fortunately the cylinder wall is clean, so just a simple swap and go.

It happens when your driving at the top of the rev range in third gear.
You hit the clutch to slam it into fourth and go into second accidentally.

What happens is the engine revs up to about 13,000 RPM and the valve springs can't hold the valves closed at that rate of speed. The open valves hit the pistons.

Normally the rev limiter keeps this from happening.

People usually deny this when first asking for mechanical advice.

It is over for the heads and pistons.
The rest of the block may be rebuildable if the cylinder walls aren't scored.

If the block is reusable you have a few choices to consider.

yeah, but not in this case. It dropped the intake valve, looks like the valve got sucked down and stripped out the keeper. Only 1 piston was damaged. No other damage upon pulling the heads

So as the days and weeks have gone by, the car has sat, and tomorrow should be a great day. Since my heads are due to arrive back from BTR. The one couldnt be saved, but we were able to find a replacement. Now comes the hard part. Pulling the piston out of the block and having the new piston and rod balanced to match the old specs.

also ordered a new valley pan cover and gasket, an intake heat shield, and an ls2 throttle body adapter plate and harness.

can't wait to get cracking at putting it all back together. Will hopefully have Dyno numbers after all is said and done.
