Default need tires

hi guys:

just bought a 2002 with only 11k miles.

original tires. tire shops, say old tires not safe.

what should I buy. it will be a road car, so don't just want a summer only tire.

thanks,

Mark

My 02Z came with Continental Extreme Contacts. Seem like a decent tire so far, a little noisy though.

Don't know as much about that...
What I'd do; go to a couple tire sites (Discount Tire and Tire Rack for example) and enter your stagger. From there you can research if you want to buy there or local. But you'll get some good brand direction to start.
Loads of people love Michelin's here on CF

Michelin A/S tires seem to be popular. You don't say where you are or what weather conditions you experience.

No matter which brand you choose is all about what you want to spend---However the most important issue when changing tire sizes different than stock is that if you stray away too much from the difference between the front tire diameters vs the rear diameters your ABS braking system will not work as designed---or not at all---The stock "split" between the front and rear is approx 1" rears being 1" taller If you alter this split your ABS controller will not work as designed---and can become dangerous on a high speed stop--This split is NOT tunable even if your correct the rear tire heights with tuning--As this 1" split is programmed into your ABS controller not the ECM
Whatever tire combination you choose try to keep the rears apprx the same as stock 1" taller than the fronts---

Are you going to stay with run flats (Zero Pressure) tires, or go with non-runflats? That's probably the first decision you need to make.

The Michelin Pilot Super Sport is a terrific tire, but a set is going to cost you close to $900 for a set.

The Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport is also an excellent tire, but is a few hundred less for a set.

Both of these tires are non-runflats, and have excellent ratings.

Good luck... GUSTO

I have a tire patch kit and portable inflator in mine. No need for a spare or runflats.

OP, what kind of weather conditions do you see? Certain summer tires are better for rain than all season tires. All seasons are for when you want long tread life and/or snow/freezing weather.

I have the Michelin Pilot SS (non run flat) I do want to sacrifice handling and comfort for something that MIGHT happen in the 30,000 mile plus life of the tire !!! (also have the complete tire kit in the car)

I'll 2nd that. Im pretty happy with my Continentals as well. Good daily driver tire. And I also picked up a Magnesium wheel with tire to throw in the back as a spare if I venture too far from home.

I have been running non runflats for years. Carry a plug kit like the Z carries but if you have AAA it really isn't an issue. I will just have them flatbed the car home.

I am shopping for new tires this summer as well since my current tires are aged out.

What if you're on a 'road trip", and 300 miles from home?

FWIW, I'm not a "panic artist", but in 40+ years of driving, I've had to deal with 3 flat tires. The first, was when somebody was simply being an a-hole, and let the air out of one of my tires, while the car was parked at a theater. The other two were caused by debris on the road, that I didn't see in time.

The first time occurred while I was out on a date. What would I have done without a spare? Called a tow truck to tow my car home, then have to deal with getting the young lady back to her home? Not practical. Second time was in the mid-80s, and while it was on a weekend, where time wasn't a factor, I was on the Interstate, and cell phones weren't as common back then. I was close enough, coincidentally, to a friend's house, so I could have walked there, and if he was at home, I could have used his phone to call a tow truck, but if he wasn't? Third time, I was on my way to work, again on the Interstate. Had a phone, by then, but time was of the essence, this time. I had to get to work.

I'm not being overly critical of people's personal choices, you can do as you choose. But I just want to warn folks who are new to the "Corvette experience", that owning a car that doesn't have a spare tire, and doesn't have run-flat tires, poses a risk............

Plug kit and tire inflator kit will take care of you unless you have a complete tire blowout.

Let me be a little more clear.....

The two instances I mentioned, where I ran over road debris, were "sidewall blowouts". NO AMOUNT of tire sealer, duct tape, airplane glue, RTV and an inflator kit, were going to fix either of those tires.

HOWEVER, as I said, anyone and everyone is free to take chances, as they see fit......

Runflats are not going to help you if you have a blowout 300 miles from home.
