Default Starting problem

I have had a problem starting my c5 a few times it didn't start the first time I turn the key. I have seen the info about taking the ignition switch apart sanding the contact points on it so it will work again. Has anyone done this and was it hard to do?

On another subject I would like to thank everyone for the info on how to fix the abs module I followed the directions that were on the forum simply re-soldered resistor reassembled and everything works great thanks again

I wrote the ignition switch post and as much as I would like to see you perform that task, I seriously doubt that your switch is the problem.

Simple TEST! Have an assistant Do all that is required to crank the engine "except" turn the key to CRANK. There is a Theft Deterrent Relay (TDR) in the passengers foot well on the fire wall above the big silver box (BCM) It has FOUR WIRES Yellow, Yellow/Black stripe, Purple and Red.

When the ignition switch is turned to CRANK you should hear that relay "CLICK"

That causes the contacts to connect the Purple and red wires together and the 12 VDC power goes out to the Starter Solenoid and the solenoid engages the starter and cranks the engine.

See if that relay is actually clicking. I have a manual C5 and I actually hold the key to CRANK and bump up & down on the clutch peddle safety switch and can hear that relay from the drivers seat.

If the relay is clicking, you at least have a functioning control circuit. To see if the relay is actually functioning (providing the solenoid 12 VDC) you would need a meter.

Our C5s have a well documented issue with the Starter SOLENOID. They STICK and cause the exact symptoms you describe. If you whack the solenoid/starter while HOLDING the key to CRANK and it cranks, you need a new solenoid.

Now, about that ignition switch. Im very mechanical / electrically inclined so, its very easy for me. Just what skill level you have will define that.

Is the car an automatic or manual trans? Can make a big difference in diagnosing what is happening. When the car does not start what is the security light on the dash doing when you leave the key in the ON position? Out?? On solid?? Blinking??

When I turn the key the engine fails to crank. The car is an automatic
I don't know what the light on the dash does when the car doesn't start, it only did it a couple times so far.

I checked the codes on the car and the only one is Bo516 H witch I think is Speedometer Signal Circuit Malfunction Unfortunately I had cleared the codes just before I installed the EBCM module. I was sure I had saved the old codes on my phone but cant find them.

If you clear the DTCs and something is worng and it is DTC supported,, TRUST US,,,,, It will be back.

HOWEVER,,,,,,,,,,,, Somethings DO NOT throw DTCs. The starter solenoid is one of the things that usually wont throw a DTC.

If the main bttery LUG on the solenoid is damaged/corroded/burnt, it could cause CHARGING SYSTEM FAULT or Generator related DTC but, if its just sticking and not allowing the starter to crank the engine, It will NOT have a realted DTC.

I just had the starting problem again. There are still no codes and it happened twice today. I did look at the security light on the dash and it was on solid both times not blinking. The second time I had the problem today was actually at my mechanics so he plugged into the care with his computer and no codes showed on his equipment either. We did check the TDR and it was clicking every time we turned the key. At this point I am thinking it is probably the starter solenoid. Is there any way to test the ignition switch? thanks everyone for your help.

IF,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, The TDR clicks when you turn the key,,, the IGNITION SWITCH is working.

Get a new reman starter or a new solenoid.
