Default Cylinder heads

Next upgrade on the list is cylinder heads. I'm looking at the as cast 220 heads for my car. I'm wondering about the chamber size and what that means for hp/tq and or compression. I see them listed on some sites at 64cc and go down from there all the way to 58cc I believe. Which size should I get and why? What's the difference/benefit? Thanks!

Loaded question

Smaller CC head=more compression
More compression=more power
Smaller chambers(less CC's)=air flow/piston-valve clearance suffers
Too much compression= detonation

etc etc etc

Everything in moderation. I went with 62cc Trickflow 220's, a ported FAST 92 and a healthy cam. 488rwhp/430ftlbs. For a 346ci motor...it flat out RIPS. 11.2'ish compression.

Good vendors out there and all the info on how to do it right is on this site and others like LS1Tech...figure out what you want the car to do, do your homework and/or holler at Tony Mamo, Brian Tooley, Ed Curtis etc etc.

Ok, so somewhere in between. I was thinking either BTR stage 4 or VR vindicator camshaft. My end goal would be 475whp so basically where you are. How much will it suffer if I keep my LS6 intake versus a setup like you have? Thanks

My cam is similar to the BTR 4...You'll give up around 20rwhp with an LS6 over a Mamo ported FAST 92/LS2 TB, if I had to guess

OP,

Check out my MMS 223 heads.....killer piece for the money

Mamo quality, design and engineering for a little more than most budget heads cost....its the best value I offer in cylinder heads and I worked a long time dialing in this program

Check out this thread discussing the heads

http://ls1tech.com/forums/generation...man-heads.html

If you have any questions shoot me an email, PM or pick up the phone

Cheers,
Tony

Thanks Tony, nice chatting on the phone with you the other day. Where does everybody get their head gaskets and bolts from?

also remember that while shopping, if you go with a large cam, the milled heads/higher compression really helps out the low end. if you dont, there's still plenty of benefit to it, but it really stands out if you lose low end compression with a large cam.

I used the ARP studs. Well worth the money. I also have Tony's AFR heads (pre-date his new company) and he modified the chamber to unshroud the intake valve. Also running Cometic 0.040" gasket and Tony's ported FAST. I had him do an oil punp while he had his porting tools out as well

Make sure you measure everything, especially since you are putting in a cam and looking for compression. Measure your spring heights and shim if necessary to control the valve train. Make sure you set the wipe on your rockers prior to measuring for pushrods and I can't emphasize this enough, go with a bigger OD pushrod.

I have threads on this forum on setting wipe, larger pushrods and a few other things along the way. Good luck and have fun with the project.
