I'm in the process of doing a clutch. The x-pipe is out and I'm wondering if I should clean out the cat material. I already have a cam and I'm getting heads and an intake soon. Any benefit to gutting them or not worth my time? Thanks, oh and my state doesn't have inspections so I'm good there.
No, there is no benefit to gutting your cats or running without cats. These engines require a small amount of backpressure to run their best, and there have been a number of tests showing that removing the cats reduces power.
With modern cats, you can make ridiculous amounts of power without increasing emissions. I'm putting over 700 to the wheels through cats. With a conservative street tune and only 9lbs of boost.

Agreed. I've run both and I like how the car sounds/runs with cats much better.
