Default Drivetrain question

2 questions. I have a 97 with 6 SPD. And 88k

#1: when I go to accelerate, sometimes the shifter will pop out of gear into neutral. Only pops out of first never 2nd. And every once in a while it'll grind into 2nd or 3rd. Again, it's not an all the time occurrence. I was told it was the clutch but have also been told it probably an issue inside the transmission.

#2: another issue upon acceleration, I hear a slight whining (similar to a belt). Haven't noticed it while revving, only acceleration. I've changed all the belts 2 times along with idler pulley and tensioner. I was told it was probably the throw out bearing but was also told it could be u joint.

If anyone has had these issues or knows what it could most likely be, any help would be appreciated.

1. Sounds like synchro sin the trans. Worn clutch won't make it fall out of gear.
2. No idea but throw out bearings usually only make noise when clutch is released in neutral.

Hello,
For #1> with the engine off, depress the clutch and >>slowly<< shift into first gear, if you do this very slowly you will feel two steps or engagements in the shifter when fully engaged in first gear.
When your shifter pops out of 1st gear, I believe you only engaged to the first detent/step in the gearbox sincro. And to be honest I don't believe there is a C5 owner with a 6 speed that has NOT experienced the shifter popping out of 1st gear at least one time of car ownership, (I too have experienced it)!
As you get a grind from sometimes going from 2nd to 3rd, I would do the following;
Drain the gearbox of old oil and service with new oil and see if, the shifter moves through the steps much smother to 1st gear than before and your shift from 2nd to 3rd is smoother too with the new oil.

#2, As you a getting a whine under acceleration, that can be a number of things...You can confirm the throw out bearing by putting a little foot pressure preload on the clutch peddle during acceleration to see if the whine changes in sound/tone. FYI there are no U joints on the C5.

Cheers
Goose

Regarding the shifter popping out of gear, it could be as simple as your shifter being out of alignment. Search shifter alignment for the procedure. It is pretty straightforward and costs nothing but your time.

The whine could be your tranny or rear differential being that it is speed dependent and not RPM. Changing fluids may help.
