So I'm baffled... I decided to upgrade the front shocks of my 2000 base Vette to the ACDelco 540-202 (C6 Z06 shocks).
The ACDelco 540-202 shocks do not come with new upper mounting nuts, so I attempted to reuse my old ones.
That went wrong... horribly, horribly wrong.
The old nut cross threaded onto the new shock and got stuck. The double D bolt (upper part of the shock) sheared off while attempting to loosen it.
At this point it was mostly together so I took the car for a test drive, but that is when the upper rubber grommet disintegrated, upper retaining convex washer flew off and then the shock jummped out of the mount and got pinned in with the upper control arm!
So! Long story short. What the hell is that upper nut for the C6, Z06 shock (ACDelco 540-202)???? This car is my daily driver, and I want to get it back up and going as soon as possible
The threads are the same on both shock absorbers. The nut and washer are designed to be reused - they don't generally come with new shocks. You may have cross threaded the nut but it was not because the threads are different. It's possible the threads were damaged in transit or you just weren't as careful as you might have been. We've all cross threaded a nut or two in our time. You can take the bolts out of the upper control arm and free up the shock. You'll have to put the old shock back on until you get a replacement for the damaged one. You should be able to find a replacement nut at a big box store or your local mechanic will probably have one laying around. Use one of the nuts from the other shocks to match it to a new one. Good luck with it.
