Running Royal Purple HPS 5W-30W and Royal Purple filter. 2004 coupe likes this, 21,000 on the clock. Changed oil last May before going to San Diego. Monitor says 54% oil life remaining. Car is used for some in town errands and a few one day or overnight trips. Another trip planned for San Diego this May. Is it really necessary to change the oil and filter since it has been a year? Not trying to be over thrifty, (cheap), just wondering if really required. We live in Phoenix, fairly dry climate compared to other areas.
Thanks
Chas
I hesitate to give advice that could be incorrect, but I would go ahead and change it, using mobil1 high milage to save some coin.
I say this from reading that the additive packages get old once the container is opened, and most suggest one year as the expiration date.
But I would double check with the Mobil one 1 800 help line before I changed what might be good oil. Perhaps Royal purple also has a customer service line.

I do not put enough miles on mine to change it more than once a year, but I do follow the owner's manual recommendations and change it at the year mark. You don't say where you live or how many miles the trip to San Diego is for you, but if it is not an inordinate number of miles, make the trip and then change the oil.

Read again... Phoenix...
Agree, manual says once a year or some amount of miles (that I can't recall because I also never hit it before a year).
Oil is Cheap.. Even on very low mileage cars, It should be changed twice a year minimum..'That's my opinion.
I change mine 3 times per year.. Even if I only get 2 or 3 thousand in during driving months

No. You don't have to change the oil.
Ideally...I'd like to change my oil before the warm season starts, but it almost never works out that way. I usually end up changing it at the and of summer/fall and see no need to change it again even after letting it sit outside for the winter. I'll start it and let it run for an hour or so when the weather gets nice in between but these guidelines (every 6 months or 1 year) aren't based in reality just covering manufacturers asses.
