Re: New Donaldson Intake Package!!!!!!! (West Coast Corvette)
Seems pricey to me even at $420. And what's with the "up to" so and so horsepower? Sounds like you want to overstate the horsepower, but still be legal in your claim. In other words "up to" 25 horsepower could mean anything from 0 gain to 25 horses. If you add up all the :bs power claims stated by the aftermarket for bolt-ons you should get more of an increase by installing a few bolt-ons than by doing a head and cam package! I have become extremely cynical of any claims made by the aftermarket or vendors. You have to be really naive to believe most of these claims of "up to". :bs :bs :bs
Once again for the new bee’s, we as do all of our competitors, sell parts to people with totally stock C5's as well as modified C5's.
The "up to" simply means that this product has the capability to produce up to 25 additional horsepower over the stock sealed air box, on a given C5.
For example a car that is completely stock may only gain 16hp from this product, over the stock air box, if you add nitrous oxide to the equation the amount will increase and a car with a supercharger can easily gain 25hp if not more, by removing the stock air box and installing this product.
If we claimed that this product only made 16hp, we would be selling the product short of its capabilities.
So when you see “up to” on a performance part, you must consider all of the potential in that part. Not just what it will do for a completely stock vehicle.

I apologize if I got this going in the wrong direction. I was simply asking a honest question about the claimed hp increase. Nothing ignorant meant by it in any way.

Todd is one of the most professional vendors around. You can always rely upon him to give accurate information. He is one of the reasons that many of our racers go to West Coast Corvettes. :yesnod:
Re: New Donaldson Intake Package!!!!!!! (gary brown)
I am a relatively new member to the forum. I have benefitted from some of the information I have gleaned from the forum as well as from the used parts I have bought. Because of this I try to be carefull of what I say -- I try not to be too critical -- I don't want to be kicked off the forum for displeasing supporting vendors. At the same time when I hear a response from a vendor that sounds like so much -- well like a spin, shall we say, and members eat it up like pablum, then I have to say something.
The claim that stating a power increase of "up to" is done so the product is not sold short is to me simply a spin ( and a "professional" response only in terms of marketing! ). Following this reasoning let's say someone took their LS1 even further to where it was capable of say 700 horsepower. The stock air-box would be seriously chocking such an engine. When you remove the stock box and replace it with a Blackwing or Vortex you might see an increase of 75 or more horsepower. So why don't the manufacturers and vendors claim "up to" 75 horsepower? After all they wouldn't want to sell the product short would they? Well the reason is they know no one would believe such a claim. They want to market the product with an ( overstated ) horsepower claim that the average consumer will still believe is possible on his car. ( This is similar to the grossly overstated wattage output of amplifiers back in the sixties and early seventies before the government put a halt to such deceptive marketing. )
I know the response to this might be, well very few people run 700hp engines in their C5's. True, but also very few run S/C's or nitrous. At least very few compared to the number who consider some aftermarket bolt-ons such as an air-box setup. Because of this horsepower claims should be stated in terms of "typical" gains on an otherwise stock car. Not in terms of "up to" , where it is conveniently not stated that "up to" means on a highly modified car.
Look, everyone with any sense knows horsepower claims are seriously overstated. Just look at the posts on the Hypertech programmer. All I ask is not to be fed a spin when I call a vendor or manufacturer on it. I quit eating pablum long ago.
