Default clutch return spring question

When removing my clutch master cylinder I noticed that the "return " spring only aids return when 1/2 way up. At the 1/2 way point the spring depresses the pedal.
Can someone explain to me why the spring is there.
Thanks

IIR correctly is to expose a port in the master cylinder.

GM has their reasoning, I cant remember verbage but its directly related to the life of the clutch.

Some guys get rid of the spring because they swear it helps pedal feel, shifting etc etc. They claim to never have had an issue by removing it.

I broke a spring, couldnt tell a difference w/o it except my cruise control wouldn't work. I stuck a new one in there.

It makes the clutch easier to depress among other things.
