You are correct, it does look like the part comes with the sock, and all the reviews don't mention it lacking anything.
I haven't done this personally yet, so I can't speak from experience, but when I looked up the part up on Amazon, they added in the notes
If you've got time on your side I would order the left sensor and hope it comes with the sock.
You can always order the sock if you need it (Prime 2 day shipping doesn't make waiting too painful). :-)
I just did this on my 97 about 2 months ago. One thing I might mention and don't know if yours will be the same but the bolts holding in the plate to get to all the stuff were strange. They had only two flat sides on them not like a regular bolt or ones that you will get in the replacement kit. I thought they were pop rivets at first. Just giving you a little heads up as they are a b*tch to remove. I had to use just a pair of plyers as no socket or wrench I had worked. Weirder thing is the passenger side had normal ones but that's not the side you need to change. I changed the driver side and now it reads correctly all the time. Good luck

Great link. Thanks Zoidman. I hope to solicit the help of a retired mechanic that I know. This link will come in handy.
The link provided is a good one. The right side is easier than the left due to the lack of the electric pump.
When removing or installing the left side, you MUST unclip the plastic sending unit base from the metal plate. This allows you to place the float arm tight and parallel against the pump body so it will slip through the tank opening. If you do not unclip the sending unit base, you will break it or never get the pump in or out of the tank opening.
I wanted to give an update. My Right hand side fuel level sensor has just arrived, and it does not come with a "sock" or strainer! It does include new screws and seal though.
In TSB# 01-06-04-022 GM indicated that the strainers were generating bubbles that were interfering with the readings so they were removed.
Take a look at that page testpros, from your profile it seems that you have a 1997 C5, which might have a different part number (GM 88896043)
Make sure you get the correct part!
Thanks to all for all the information shared. This forum has saved me time and money many times over.
I hate to say this, but after giving this project more thought I decided to have the fix done by a professional. Yea, I know... I'm a whimp. Cost was just north of $900. It's sure nice having a gas gauge again
