Default Replacing Fuel Level Sensor question(s)

I finally had enough of this tank showing empty all the time. I tried all the recommended solutions (e.g., Techron, etc.). Nothing works. So I'm gonna bite the bullet and have them replaced. My dealer quoted $1,750 (ouch!!). What have others paid?

He also said the right tank sensor automatically comes with a fuel pump. Is that correct?

Also, does anyone have part numbers for these fuel level sensors for a 1997?

One last question. Should I go ahead and have the left fuel pump changed while I at it?

It is actually an easy job to do 1750.00 is Way overpriced
Your left tank has the actual fuel pump the right side is a jet/siphon pump (not an electric pump)

Buy the sensor for 80 bucks off ebay. Take the hour or 2 it takes to change it. Send me 500 for this advice and you still have 1170 that you thought would be gone..You are welcome and yes I can provide a link on how to do this..

What codes are you getting. IIRC there is a separate code for left vs right sender. My right sender quit and I decided to replace both senders and pumps due to the car having 200,000 miles on the clock. The pump was still good but thought it was good insurance to change. I think I spent around $500 for parts.

If you are capable of changing a tire, you have enough skill to change out the pumps. So long as you have a jack, jack stands, wheel chock, and some sockets, you're good to go. Just take your time. The tricky part is running the tanks down.

One other point. Check your components BEFORE you tear your car apart. One of my fuel senders had a broken tab when it arrived. I lost a week of driving my car waiting for a replacement.

Yea, while I have it apart I plan to change both sensors and the fuel pump. Don't want to do this twice.

Just post up if you have questions the tricky part is getting the pump in with the sock angle. Other than that piece of cake.

Does anyone happen to know the GM parts and part numbers I need to replace both Fuel Level Sending Units and the Fuel Pump for my 1997?

I'm in the same boat as you... need to replace my Right fuel sender. :-(

Right Fuel Sensor:
ACDelco MU1218 ACDelco MU1218
GM PN: 89047748

Left Fuel Sensor:
ACDelco SK1318 ACDelco SK1318
GM PN: 10333749

They also suggest you should get a new filter "Sock" for both sensors
ACDelco TS140 ACDelco TS140
GM PN: 12459862

Zoidman, it looks like the Left Fuel Sensor comes with a "sock" from the picture. Do I still need two socks?

You are correct, it does look like the part comes with the sock, and all the reviews don't mention it lacking anything.

I haven't done this personally yet, so I can't speak from experience, but when I looked up the part up on Amazon, they added in the notes
Notes: ALSO ORDER SOCK KIT 12459862
If you've got time on your side I would order the left sensor and hope it comes with the sock.
You can always order the sock if you need it (Prime 2 day shipping doesn't make waiting too painful). :-)
