Disabling passenger side airbag...

I'm picking up my 99 this weekend and had a question regarding the passenger airbag. Because my 2 month old son sooner or later will end up riding in it, I would like to disable the passenger side airbag. :smash: :smash: Are there any procedures for doing this, or should I let the dealer handle it? I am always leery about letting the dealer work on my cars since they have wrecked 2 of them, and scratched the hell out of the clear top on my 93 C4. But if I need to, I will gamble and let them do it.

If it can be done, is there a switch or something that can be added? Since my wife will be riding in there also, I would like to have it easily enabled for her.

Anybody done this?

On my '02 there's a cutoff switch for the passenger side air bag (key activated) in the console. Not sure about the '99s.

That's why I got a used "01, so my 3 year old could be in it. I found two companies that said they "Could" do it, but they would NOT guarantee that it would not go off in an accident. So, my wife said, either get a newer vette or I couldn't have one! I know, twist my arm! :D

I bought the kit from Ken Fitchner here on the forum, it is a gm kit and I installed it myself. There is a really good website by one of the forum members on how to do this. I think it is 97vette.com, but I am not sure.
It is a simple fix, I take my 2year old all of the time, she loves it.

You will have to get the kit. The disable switched was added mid year of the 2000 model year run.

I just did mine last month....well, I didn't do it but I had it done in my 99. I applied for installation through NHTSA website (it's on here somewhere) and received a letter back from them giving me permission to do it. I did this in case I sell the car- it removes liability. I watched the guy install it (old gm mechanic). He took his time and it took him about 2 1/2 hours. It was definitely worth it- took my son for a ride this week...He loved it!!! :cheers: Good luck with yours. btw I also bought mine from Ken. :yesnod:
