Mine had a loud tapping to the point I spent weeks researching piston slap.
Stumbled on the Mobil oil topic and tried it.
One thing you can do is get a quart of Lucas oil treatment which is pretty thick, put at least a half quart in (race LS cars normally run an extra quart anyway) and I'm willing to bet that thicker oil will make a difference.
If you think you have damage or wear that is causing your noise, then no amount of oil viscosity or goop is going to cure a clearance or wear. Mobil1 15w50 does not quiet my tapping noise, and I am pretty convinced the noise is normal. The build is 6 years old and probably over 100 track days at VIR, RA, Sebring, Slummit Point, etc. Oh yea, about 10 track days at the NCM MSP (fun fun track)
bwill, I rigged a lavalier microphone to a stick and did a video/sound of my track car; cam, headers, etc, and made a video with good sound of the noise I hear. I just uploaded the file to a dropbox link Once DROPBOX processes and gives a green check (125meg file, takes a while) I will PM you with the link. You will hear some pretty annoying tapping for you to compare to the noise you hear in your car.
After hearing mine, let us know what you think.
I am reluctant to forum post the dropbox link, but if anyone else is interested, PM me and I will pm the link. However, I would ask that you not share. Don't need to be accused of colluding with the Russians!!!!!!

I appreciate you making the video. I believe we may be dealing with different issues but I'm not positive. I didn't hear anything from up top that sounded the same but at one point underneath I heard a sound that sounded similiar. My tap sounds like it is much louder and more of a metal on metal sound. Here is a pretty good vid of underneath, hopefully you can hear what I'm talking about.
Mine has a lot more exhaust noise, But I can clearly hear the same taps in my engine that you hear in yours.
I use an app on my tablet for another hobby, watch repairing. The app is WILDSPECTRA Anyway, the beat of a pocket watch (except really old ones) is usually 18,000beats/hr, which is 5 per second. This would be about the rate of the cam rotation at idle e.g., (600rpm=10r/s, cam rotates 1/2 crank revs therefore 5/s). Sure enough, the beat of my tap is about 5/sec. Yours seems about the same, so I'm concluding it is one valve that is tapping. Whether it is a tappet, or just a valve tapping on the seat is anyone's guess.
If it is any consolation, my tap noise goes away as the engine speed goes up. Based on my history, I quit worrying.

I have honestly tried to just not worry about it but I am too **** about my car and it just sounds terrible. If it were just a valve tapping on the seat what can cause that and is that doing any damage? I am really close to just ordering new lifters and swapping them and checking everything while I'm in there but I just wanted to do my research before jumping into that. I ran a bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil through the crankcase before my last oil change and that had no effect. I have also put a bottle of techron in thr gas tank. I thought about trying one more bottle of the MMO just to make sure everything is clean.
