Default Intermittent Active Handling Engaged without Cause 2004 C5

Seems to be a common problem. Many saying Steering Wheel Position Sensor. Others suggest much greater problem of the EBCM which apparently is no longer available through GM.

For no reason while driving hwy speeds, active handling tweeks the breaks and disengages the cruise control. Turned off cruise control and still periodically seeing active handlng engaged for no appropriate reason. Checked computer codes: 1287 and 1288 which looks like the Steering Position Sensor.

Does anyone have a diagnosis procedure to confirm? With these symptoms, am I safe to assume the Steering Wheel Position sensor is the problem. If so, can you please provide a link with current details on replacement procedure for C5 2004 Corvette. Thanks.

The SWPS should still be available for 2001-2004 C5s Call all the local autoparts stores and see if you can get the part.

97-2000 are the years that have NO LONGER SUPPORTED PARTS.

My 04 did the same thing for over a year before it finally threw a code for the SWPS. I replaced it and everything has been great ever since. Spend the $70 or so and a couple hours of your time and you will be good to go. I did it alone and with minimal cursing.

The part # is 88965543. Had to change out mine on my '04 a few years ago.

Then after you fix it, buy another one. It will not be long before GM stops making these as they did for previous years. I have one in my stock of "just in cases" box.
