The signs that the rack was going out are it made a pop/crack sound every now and then when you make a turn at low speed (less than 5mph). Then after it gets really bad, your alignment will go and your tires will start to wear faster.
I had mine alligned last month and the steering wheel was centered when aligned, now the steering wheel is turned to the left and the car still goes straight with the bad rack, but pulls slightly to the right.
When the tech put the car on the lift and pulled down on the tie rods, the driver side made a pop sound.
Since the steering still worked fine and the broken rack made the car have toe in, it handled fine, till the tires wore smooth. It went from bad to really bad in one day and on a 250 mile trip wore the front tires smooth.
If it is not the rack, you may just need an alignment, that had tighened up my steering when I had it done.
