Removed springs from Hurst shifter
I removed the centering springs and the adjustment screws on the Hurst today. During the test drive I noticed shifting into 5th, 6th, and reverse was definitely easier with less effort. My only complaint about the shifter was shifting into those gears required too much effort. I solved the problem for me. Has anyone else done this?
The springs are what keeps you from hitting 1st gear instead of 3rd gear when you throw it. I wouldn't remove them, just put in the lightest ones. I have the lightest ones in mine and I have no problem getting it into 5th or reverse.
Just move your purse out of the way and it works fine...:lol::lol::lol:
kind of like the initial install basically - with a slight difference - pull the boot up (reverse it) take the allen bolts out carefully so as to not lose the bolt or spring/s that is going to want to fly out of there (and possibly drop in the tranny case) then put the lightest outer spring there is with the kit on each side. I recommend doing one at a time to keep things simple. Biggest thing is to do it with good lighting and loosen by hand the allen bolts as soon as you don't need the allen wrench anymore, so you can keep things from getting lost
Since the stock shifter depends on the centering capacity of the transmission, I don't see a problem with this setup other then slapping the shifter hard during an upshift would make your setup more vulnerable to a missed gear.
The Hurst shifter felt very tight upon installation but after 6 months, it feels like it has loosened up very nicely. No problems throwing it into 5th or 6th.
Just don't ever lift straight up on your shifter now. You can pull it out of the tranny link receiver. The compressed length of the springs is also an overhaul stop, so as not to allow disengagement of the shaft to the linkage. Same on Ripper and others...

My purse wasn't in the way. It was your wife's.  :yesnod:
Installed the Hurst today. What are the springs that it is shipped with? I kept those in and tightened the "one turn" adjustment allowed on both sides. Shifts great!!! New Momo ****.....no rattles whatsoever! Great do it yourself Mod. Quick shifts...oh yah! Thanks to Ed Bon for his digital pictorial walk through on the install. You made it much easier. Thanks.
