Hello all, within the past hour I was out for a drive in my 2000 MN6. All was well and normal then out of the blue, when I attempted to shift to first gear, the shifter felt as if it was being guided into third and felt "loose". Eventually it went into first but the shifter still had excessive play in it as well as it does when in third now. In every other gear the shifter feels firm and tight like it should. This just randomly came out of nowhere. Any ideas or experinces with this?
Sounds like you have some sort of SLOP/excessive lost motion in the shifter/shifter linkage.
You should remove the center console and do a visual on the shifter lever (TOP part of the shifter) and the Lower Shifter Box (bottom part of the shifter).
When you actually MOVE the stick to shift, NOTHING on the upper or lower box should (FLEX/MOVE or SHIFT)
All that you should see move is the stick where it goes into the center of the top shift plate and the shift rod at the back of the box. There is a joint that connects the shift box to the shift rod. That joint should be TIGHT and NOT have any flex or looseness check to see that the one bolt at the joint is tight
The four fasteners that secure the top of the shifter to the lower box can come loose also/
