Default FLP Level IV Transmission THUNK

I was just curious of the experience of other owners of this transmission. The shift from 1st to 2nd has a pretty jarring thunk to it --- just not smooth. It doesn't really bother me, as long as I know it is normal. 2-3 and 3-4 are butter smooth.

Don't want to fry it!

Thanks,

Tom

You might want to confirm that FLP install a shift kit. If they installed a Transgo or similiar kit the 1-2 shift does have a real kick to it. :yesnod: The spacers in the accumulator will govern the sharpness of the shift..typically there are 2 spacers installed..if you have 3..well.. that would be a full race setup and a little more than you anticipated for just cruising...just my .02:D

I'll ask Mike -- he'll know. I don't mind the full race, given the power it will be putting down.

It is normal for the 1/2 shift under normal slower driving conditions to shift real hard even when doing only 15 mph, etc. This is normal for the FLP Level IV tranny which is built for ***** out drag racing mode! :smash:

Mine does have a transgo shift kit, however, Austrian Vette, answered my original question when i got my FLP installed 16 months ago, also confirming that this was normal. Chuck Johnson also has confirmed this for me.

best of luck to you!

Jeff:

Recently my 2/3 shift from 60 to WOT feels a little bit funky on the highway. Ever experience something like that in your 98. How is your 2/3 overall from 50mph to WOT on the highway, etc.

I run a Stage IV FLP tranny also - with my "ZR1 tires" I get a "chirp" at almost any speed at the 1 - 2 shift. In other words it shifts HARD 1 - 2. The 2 - 3 and the 3 - O shift a bit smoother. With my ET Streets the shift is a lot smoother 1 - 2 because the tire "gives" a lot more. At WOT I get "rubber" shifting into 2 even at the dragstrip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You gotta luv it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My car seems to shift fine. Under WOT with my runcraps on it will get a small wheel spin! I have also been experimenting with my LS1-Edit with different t/c lock up values and line pressures.

The "Vinci" fully rollerized heads and cam were installed by FLP 2 weeks ago and I will be going to the "Grove" this Saturday to TT the setup. I better be in the 11's or I will be diappointed as I put a rollbar and harness in to be legal. Last year around this time at 66 I ran 12.13 @ 114 with a 3.42, shorty headers, and a Bassani X-Pipe, and drag radials.

I will be running at the Grove on 10/6 with the North Shore Corvette Club, and at 66 on 10/13 in the Drag News Magazine Bracket Championships.
Maybe I'll see you there or at Byron as I run there sometimes.

On my tranny, the 1-2 shift is always very firm. If I drive with a somewhat enthusiastic go pedal, 2-3 will fell very firm also. Usually, 2-3 and 3-4 are pretty smooth. The cool thing is if you drive it in semi-manual mode, all the shifts feel very firm. At the 1/4 mile track, I really haven't been able to pay attention to the shifts because all my attention is on the road in front of me. It seems that running with slicks requires a little more attention and effort. :yesnod: On the 1/8 mile track, I do get to notice the 2-3 shift at the top end of the track and it feels real dam* solid. Chuck and FLP IMO build the best transmissions...

It's good to know it's normal. I kind of like it, but wanted to make sure it wasn't a problem.

Thanks to all!

My 1-2 shift is only hard under WOT or medium to heavy acceleration. When just crusing the 1-2 is pretty smooth. I wish I cold get the 2-3 to bang like the 1-2.

I am looking into upgrading my trans to the level IV. Is it normal for FLP to put in a shift kit or is this an upgrade?

Is the FLP Level 4 tranny a new transmission or a beefed up stock one?

I believe the level IV comes with the shift kit included as part of the package. The level IV is a very beefed up "stock" unit.
