Does the ECM need to be reprogrammed when swapping out the stock air box and filter? I'm considering replacing it with a new intake and filter such as a K&N or something comparable. The new one has the two cone shaped filters. Also, does anyone know if it's a beneficial change? Thanks!

Depends on the intake...and your mods.
Get the k&n and do the flip-zip tie mod and enjoy that. Don't really need a tune for that.
Vararam, definitely, if you want to get the most out of it.
Air filter alone won't give you too much with a stock engine. Add headers with the new air filters for the most improvement. With stock cam and heads, then the ECM will compensate for the change without any problems. After market cam and heads might need the tuner to adjust for the change. If you haven't had it tuned before then a tune, even a mail order tune, could produce some really good results that can be felt in the seat of the pants.

No need to tune just for an air intake. The new filters may give a few more horsepower, but you will enjoy the sound even more. As others have hinted, changing the air intake is often the proper beginning of a series of modifications.
You may consider tuning the car yourself with a diablosport canned tune. Even without mods, their base tune will wake up throttle response. Check out the tuning forum.
Unless you add air from outside the engine compartment, you will not make more than 2hp. When GM was testing for the Z06, way back when, they found that after a small opening in the cover all they were adding was sound and and getting the filters dirty earlier in its life. The dual cone have been tested many years ago and were found to not add any hp but were slightly detrimental to the acceleration at lower rpms.
Each cylinder has roughly 43.25 cubic inches of volume. Without forced induction or added oxygen (nitrous) the incoming air temp controls the density of the charge going into the cylinders. Using engine compartment air, you are usually between 140-180 deg. temps. if the outside ambient temps are 60-80 you will make measurably more hp. Because of the algorithms in the PCM when a large volume of air enters the MAF is slows down the velocity of the air to the TB and the engine pull spark, fuel, etc to run within its parameters. Bottom line in a stock engine cooler air make more hp.
