Default Fuel pump ('00)

Well, looks as if my question disappeared to cyberland.

Periodic no start & randomly engine dies. Had several shops look at it & say it's getting fuel. Finally wouldn't start at all & had it towed to the dealer. New fuel pump to the tune of $1300. Engine died twice in the next two days. Since then everything has been fine.

Fast forward to first of this week.(six months later) Hard to start, cranks but doesn't fire. Finally started & drove 3 miles, engine died. Hard to re-start. 6 more miles & engine died, restart was easy while still rolling. Next morning, cranks but no start. Same that evening & next morning. Towed to dealer again.

Dealer says it looks like the fuel pump is bad again. Does this happen regularly? I've had this car 8 years & this is the first (& second) time with this problem. Only 60,000 miles.

I'd appreciate any insight. Others had this problem? Could it be something else causing this?

I would check/replace the crankshaft position sensor.. This sounds more like
your symptoms..
It is located in the block above the starter

Pull your codes and post them! Do not turn off the ignition after it fails to start. This will give people here a chance to understand what is going on at the time of the no start. Make sure to record the H, HC, or C after each code.

My first fuel pump lasted 200,000 miles and was still working when replaced. I changed it because I was going in to address the fuel sender issue. The second pump has 68,000 and running fine. Could it be you have a bad one. I doubt it though. I think your dealership is throwing parts at your problem. Have them PROVE the pump is bad.

Pull and post all codes. I let my cell phone videotape as the codes pop up so I don't miss one.

In the back of my mind I also wonder if you might want a new fuel filter. Easy to install yourself in half an hour if you're mechanically inclined. Or 100 for local shop to do in one hour plus parts.

Steve, as you probably know, many of us are not fans of dealerships......
Did they finally fix it ($1300.) and what was the problem? Thanks.

Got car back last night. They told me if there was a signal going to the fuel pump (and there was) then it definitely was fuel pump. New fuel filter less than 5000 miles ago. Replaced pump @ n/c for pump & labor.

There have been no codes, checked by myself & 2 shops.

Update: With 2nd fuel pump in car cranks for 5-10 seconds before starting. Previously it started instantly. Any idea what might be going on here?

Have the fuse box under the hood checked out. Had similar problem couple years ago. Were the fuel pump relays are there was a crack in the wire (fuse box wires are rolled thin like foil) and when I hit the Ing. switch it would ark. Start, die, start die. Some times 6,8,10 times. Would stay running until shut down, most of the time. but would quite and come back to life sometimes. Replace the fuse box, no more problem. Only other thing would be the Ing switch...Look for the Bill Curlee switch cleaning info on the CF.
