Default Balancer job done

well I completed the balancer job all went pretty well considering only 2 real problems one was getting one of the power steering lines off of the steering gear could not get it to come loose. I ended up having to cut it off. But thanks to Mark at vettenuts I got a used one and with his help answering a couple questions for me it worked out ok. Getting the balancer bolt out was also a bit of a problem but a big enough breaker bar and a piece of pipe took care of that. My advice to anyone going to do this job I pulled the radiator and fans out it gives you more room to work under their I can see you don't have to but I think it made things easier. Took my time and replaced all idler and tensioner pulleys. Started up tonight all seems good so far. Thanks to the people of this forum who was willing to answer my questions when I had them.

I plan to do this over the Winter while she is sleeping. You saved yourself a ton of money and more importantly, you did the job correctly because it is your own vehicle. Nice accomplishment!

What kind of balance did you use? I'll be tackling this job come winter, as well.

I just did this job on Labor day, and let me tell you it's a job.

It's not hard, but it does take patience. I went with a Powerbond balancer, and ARP bolt. I also replaced the front seal while it was off.

Used a gear puller to remove old balancer and the new ARP bolt came with an install tool (headless long bolt, nut and washer).

Whole thing took about 10 hours with some breaks in that time period.

Really ran into no issues, but my steering wheel is slightly mis-aligned now but I'll adjust the tie rod ends to fix.

I also took out the alternator to give more room to remove the power steering lines and steering shaft.

I really enjoy working on my car, but this is something I hope I don't have to do again ever, or at least a long time.

did you guys use a seal install tool or did you just press it on by hand?

I want to make sure the HB install tool is good quality, dont need anything breaking off in this process. You have a referral to the one you used?

I used an all rubber seal from summit racing part# ADO-296-02. No need for any tool follow directions installing very easy.

This is what I bought. Got the ARP bolt and the tool together. Seal is just pressed in there did it with a rubber hammer and my hand. You will need a tool to get the old balancer off. I had a 3 jaw gear puller that worked well. Heat the new balancer up in the oven (200 degrees) or with a torch. It will help it go on better, as it is pressed on the crank.

I know this is for the C5, but do you guys have a step-by-step maintenance guide or something that you used to help you through this? I thought I saw a C6 one on here a few weeks ago, but I can't seem to find it now. I just got mine jacked up and plan to start as soon as parts and tools arrive here in the next few days.

Thanks!

Yes it covers much more but you should be able to pick out the step you don't need. I would pull the radiator, accessories (mostly to help get the steering rack out), and steering rack.

If you don't pull the front cover to replace the gasket, I don't see a need for the front seal install tool.

If you do pull the front cover to replace the gasket, swap cams etc I would get the alignment tool. If you do not align the front cover, you can easily damage the seal.
