Default Severe rear wheel vibration

So, I spent the past 2 hours searching the forums for wheel hop/vibration/shaking posts and while I've learned a lot, I didn't see my particular issue, so I thought I would start from scratch.

2000, auto, no mods, factory wheels, tires need to be replaced.

This is an intermittent issue. When traveling at highway speeds and I accelerate, I get a tremendous wheel hop on the right rear wheel, until I let off the gas. The car shakes and the right rear is very violent. Almost like I'm running over a cobble stone street on that side of the car. I can't swear to it but I believe it happens in 3rd or OD. I will need to get a better pattern on it.

Has anyone seen anything like this before?

time to jack the car up and try and move the wheel at the 3:00 and 9:00 positions and then again at 12:00 and 6:00 lets make sure there is no funny bearing issues or half shaft/axle stub issues going on.

there should be no movement

Sounds like a plan. I'll try that this weekend.

Here is a very good You Tube Vid on that very subject!!

- IS MY C5 WHEEL BEARING BAD: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...diagnosis.html

You can try this too while you have the jack out:

Jack up One REAR wheel (other wheel on the ground) Trans in N and E brake OFF.

Attempt to rotate the of ground Rear wheel. There should be some force to over come as you are slipping the limited slip clutches to break that wheel free. NOTE THE FORCE that it takes to break it free!!

Do the exact same thing to the other rear wheel.

The force to break either wheel free should be the same and feel the same. If one is much less than the other, you have limited slip clutch issues or the limited slip clutch beleview spring is broken.

Could also be a damaged output shaft.

Give all that a try and see where you are.

Bill

Tank you Bill. My first inclination was a posi unit issue or an axle shaft issue, due to the severity of the vibration. I'll get her up in the air this weekend and poke away.

It was my old Toyota pickup, not my vette, but I had a somewhat similar vibration drive me crazy for a while, eventually turning out to be the tread separating from the tire. Showed up on a spin balance.
