heater AC panel lights

heater AC panel lights
2k c5 AC/Heater control lights. I don't have the display screen one just the generic 3 turn **** one.
Issue
When I turn on my headlights the ac/heater panel lights up for a second and goes off. The ac light and rear defog light buttons don't light up showing on or off.
If my headlights are off The ac and rear defog buttons light up if I turn them on to use them.
Before I tear apart this dash this weekend what should I look out for?
