Default ABS module repair

Had the dreaded SERVICE ABS/TRACTION CONTROL. I decided to look at it myself and after removing the control module I discovered the issue was the solder joint for the main power coming into the module (see photos). I resoldered it and then sealed it back up using gray high temp permatex. Viola it is repaired and only took me about anhour and a half, and I had all the needed supplies on hand so out of pocket was $0.00. Hope this helps someone👍🏻

Basically right under the power steering fluid reservoir. It is the piece with the barcode on it. You remove the screws coming in from the passenger side where the harness attaches. Once removed you do have to open it to access the board. Steady hand with a razor blade is how I did it. You are not getting into any area where brake fluid is. Hope this helps.

Thanks for posting this! I've done some similar repairs on BMW's, so I'm wondering if it's possible to fix my ABS module if it breaks. It's odd how nobody rebuilds the 97-98 modules, seems ridiculous to think that a simple circuit board can't be fixed with a bit of soldering and know-how.

Thanks for posting this. Could come in handy for those who have an ABS problem.

You bet! From my research I saved anywhere from $400-$1200 doing it myself👍🏻

Glad you got yours fixed.
Gives me hope.
I'm in the same boat--ABS, Traction Control, Active Handling, and code 1214.
Got the air bridge and electrical connectors off, but the torx 20 screws are giving me trouble.
Hopefully, I can break them loose tomorrow.

Pulled the ECBM on my 03 Coupe with 115K miles apart and re soldiered the relay joints last month. Over 500 miles so far and no more Traction Control/ABS lights to bug my head.
Had ordered a set of extra long torque X sockets that made the job so much easier.

Next will be the Temperature controler when I change out the radio.

I used an extension and a ratchet to break um free. Yours sounds exactly like mine started. Good luck man.

Just finished this job. I used 1/4 ratchet with 6" t20 bit that made the job go smoothly when dealing with those screws. Also much easier if bit is magnetized as well.

I bought brand new oem ebcm from chevy dealer for around 600.00. Will send my old one to get the upgrades and keep as a spare or possibly sell.

This is some great news to me as I'm pretty good with a soldering iron and have the dreaded intermittent Service ABS/Traction/Active Handling issue on my 2001 base model.

My only question is WHERE is this module and do you have to remove it from underneath the car or can you get it from top down?

If I have to get under the car, forget it. I have no way of doing that.

While there are pictures and such they're not all that good. Can anyone give a dummy like me a starting point as to where to look?

Look in in front of the alternator where all the brake lines meet to the right of air intake. You simply unplug the electrical connectors and remove the 4 torx screws. It’s that easy. You will need to cut very carefully thru the sealant to open it. A razor blade worked for me. There are videos on YouTube for additional help.
