My wife's stock 2000 with 120K miles has developed a ticking sound. Also, it did not pass the AZ emissions test. Because I'm out of town, she took it to a local Chevy garage that says the sound is on the lower end. Would a noise coming from the lower of the engine result in failing an emission test? She has parked it till I get home but I thought I'd get a jump/help on analyzing the problem. Thanks in advance.
You need to figure out the failed emissions test first, as 8vette7 has said.
Once that is done, the ticking sound can be a lot of things. Common ticking sounds are from pad slap when the engine is cold, from the injectors, and from the valvetrain. Pad slap when cold is fairly normal and almost entirely benign. Injectors and valvetrain are loud in this car, and are louder yet with loud exhausts.
Anyways, there's not a whole lot you can do with "ticking sound" other than to either ignore it or bring it to a mechanic or even a dealer.
