Hey guys new to the group here. Got a 98 with 50,000 miles on it a couple months ago. I’ve been having an issue same as everyone else with a chirping noise that started about 100 miles ago. At about 3 grand on the rpm scale there’s a single chirp sometimes twice through the rpm band. I thought it was a belt but it’s not constant, it only happens as I accelerate. Sometimes it starts when the engine is heated up, sometimes when it’s cool, and also sometimes it doesn’t do it at all. I’m really at a loss as to what to check, if anybody has had a similar problem please help a new c5 owner out.
Have you actually changed the drive belts yet? It's good - and cheap - preventative maintenance.
One of the first things I did when I bought my 99 with roughly 36K miles on it was change both the serpentine and A/C belts. I didn't go crazy and buy Gatorbacks or whatever else is recommended. I just bought some run-of-the-mill Duralast belts. The car was not driven much but under my ownership I started driving it quite a bit and very shortly after purchase it developed a small periodic chirp. My assumption is the belts had begun to harden some. Ever since then not a chirp one.
