Its a broken cable underneath the vehicle. Very common, not too hard to replace. Not too expensive. Just have to remove the mid pipe, then remove the torque tube cover (and 10 gazillion bolts) and then you'll see your cable. Look at both ends first, shifter and transmission. Might just simply be loose on one end there and you can fix that. If it's broken, then a replacement will be needed. Only thing to really watch out for is to NOT bend it very much. Most problems occur when trying to re-attach to the shifter and folks break their new cable by bending it upwards too much. I'll post a few links to help you out. It's a common issue on A4 C5s. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...-question.html https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...le-repair.html https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...r-failure.html

Thanks for all your info. It was what I feared. Now I have to jack up car out in stone drive and work on it on my back in colder weather. At 69-1/2 years old, this isn't what I want to be doing.
I'm 66 so I know where you're coming from but I still like to turn the wrenches. I also have a MaxJax lift so I'm not quite as limited as you are. I can think of one option that might help ya a little. If you look in your local Craigslist, there are listings for mobile mechanics that will drive to you and do the job. Some are young and just getting started and some are really experienced. Might save your back and keep you warmer. Of course, the downside is you're allowing someone you don't really know to work on your car. There's not really much they can break on this repair though. Another option might be to contact the local Corvette club and see if one of the members there might be willing to lend a hand. GL with your fix and let me know which way you decide to go.

Thanks for all the links, especially the ones with pics. I can really equate when I see pics. I'll have to get that shifter up and out to see, GOD I HOPE, that it is just the bushing.
Thanks to all who have posted on this now and in the past.
