Default Tech 2 user assistance

Just got my Tech 2 knock off. Everything seems to work just fine as far as setting up the tech 2, but when I try to connect it to my car, I get
this message:

no communications with vehicle
check diagnostic link connector
check ignition <off/on>

I have my key in the on position but not running, cable connection appears to be correct

I must be missing something, any suggestions?

Mike

Are you feeding a separate 12volt to the Tech 2 or are you only using the OBD2 cable ?

I feed the 12volt from the sigaretteholder into the end of the OBD cable .

Thanks for the info, learned some new today:

I connect 12volt to Tech2 when I control the Tech2 from my Tis2000 on my laptop when I upload snapshots to my PC.
I did not know I could drop to connect the separate 12 volt when the Tech 2 was connected to the CAR.

Hooked my code reader up to my obdII, works fine so I know it is not the port. I can go through the options on the tech II, at one point I get to vehicle identification, select one of the following product lines, and lists c,e,f,h,j,k,m,n,s. I went down the list until one of them worked, j, and got me to the bcm menu, but anything I try from there gives me the no communications with vehicle message. What are the vehicle identification codes?

The 120VAC input 12VDC output power supply that is supplied with the Tech2 should only be used when working offline. It can mess with the ground reference if it is powering the TECH2 while connecting to the vehicle.
When connecting to the vehicle the Tech2 can be powered from the DLC (OBDII connector), cigarette lighter power cable or the battery clip power cable.

Why not just use an MDI clone? much simpler and a bit cheaper.

Can you use a tech 2 to edit anything in the PCM? Eg turn off error reporting for rear o2 sensors and air injection after installing headers and x pipe? I see a lot of people on here saying it’s possible but from what I’m reading it’s not. Even with TIS2000 it seems that will only let you write modules to the pcm like updates from GM but you can’t edit specific functions. I don’t see any way to do it after spending a few hours playing with mine but I’ve been known to overlook simple things before and would like to hear from anyone here that actually knows the answer.

Update - looks like I got a defective unit. Will not pass self test. Having issues with customer service. I'm glad I purchased using Paypal, may have to get them involved.
It's a shame, I really want the unit, but this has turned into a major ordeal.
I guess when buying direct from China, its buyer beware.

Maybe you would be better off with a good used one? I have a Vetronics one that I got back in 2002 and it still works fine. Only thing I've done is keep up with the updates (last one was 2013, I think), replace the 10mb card with the 32mb card, and buy a candi module for 2005 and up pcm's. The unit itself or cable has never failed even while I was using it everyday as a driveability tech. I dont know how the china knock offs hold up, I think I paid 3500 back then.

Which test is it failing on? I’ve had pretty good luck with my tech2 clone but like most Chinese knockoffs you never know what you’re going to get.
Thanks for confirming that dmaxx3500 I’ll probably get hptuners.

Also, double check your USB cable. The one that came with my tech2 clone was defective and I would either get unable to communicate with vehicle or unable to find mdi adapter msgs. I got the unable to communicate with vehicle message pretty consistently while I was trying to figure out what was wrong. Since I switched to another USB cable, it has been working fine.
