HELP!!! Severe rear-end vibration during aggressive left turns.
Maybe someone can help me. I just bought a 2001 Coupe with a 6 speed and the adjustable suspension. During agressive left turns (never right) the entire car vibrates and, as the rear breaks loose, engages the yaw dampener. There is no steering wheel vibration, and it feel like it is coming more from the rear end. It is bordering on dangerous.
The dealer cannot figure it out. He has inspected and tightened everything. He even tested it with different wheels to no avail. Any ideas???
UPDATE: I picked up the car. We noticed the vibration comes from the inside (left rear) tire hopping during the turn. The dealer contacted Chevrolet tech support and they said, service the differential, make sure it has "additive" and drive it 500 miles. This sounds like code for "Duh, I dunno." Still Struggling.

This is not much help, but when I had a chassis problem the dealer put "Chassis Ears" on the car to determine where the problem came from. My understanding is this devise is a series of sensors attached to different parts of the chassis that measure viabration. My problem was corrected by tightening a bolt on the rear sway bar. It wasn't torqued properly when I changed the exhaust.

Eric it sounds like the same problem I had when I got my car back after I complained that my rear diff was leaking. I was gettting this grinding noise when I turned left or right.
They said you have to drive it for 100 miles because of the additive they put in the rear diff. Well I knew they never put it in 200 miles later. I went back and they changed the fluid and added the correct fluid with the additive. The noise and grinding went away.
I thought it might of been related to them fixing my e-brake, because it was not working as well. I thought they tightened the e-brake to much and was rubbing on my rotors as I turned.
if you are still getting this problem after you get it back from the dealer. I would change out the diff fluid yourself, very easy and there is a tutorial on how to do it. Also, check your e-brake, sway bar lug nuts to make sure they are torque down correctly.
Good luck buddy and let us know how it turns out.
Oh I am taking my vette in for the 2nd time on a rear diff leak. :mad
Re: HELP!!! Severe rear-end vibration during aggressive left turns. (EricInLasVegas)
Have you checked for a failed shock or loose end link? I almost thought "differential additive" until I realized it only happens on hard left turns. It could still be the additive, but I think that'd cause problems turning both ways.
A failed shock could easily cause wheel hop in our cars, between the tire size, IRS, and limited slip diff.

Thanks for the comment. I too suspected the bearings and/or the hubs. We checked the bearings and they "appear" fine. This has become a Chevrolet R&D field project. Next, we are going to replace the shocks and maybe the monospring.

Good luck Eric, at least they are narrowing down the problem one by one. The worst part of all is being away from the vette :cry . They'll get it fixed seems like your tech guy is trying his best.

I can see why they suspected the differential additive. The diff is supposed to be drained and refilled at the first 10,000 mile service and it may be that wasn't carried out correctly.
