 Thanks, what does everyone think about attempting these on your own, any tricks you should know or is it straight foward replacement of the ring and pinion?
Re: How to tear down a diff.....pics inside>:O) (vstella)
Danngg....you got some gutz...I wouldn't be able to even find the diff if I had to...congrats on all the hard work you are doing...pretty sure it will pay off...
Re: How to tear down a diff.....pics inside>:O) (C5Noir)
I am working on a new differential setup. Paul @ COH is sending me another rear end to work on to try and fabricate a new passenger side shaft. My plan is taking a spare driver side spider gear and isntall it on the passenger side of the diff and have a new shaft made for that. The current passenger side spider gear and shaft is a one piece deal. ALot of custom work but the end result will be a bulletproof rear end. Stay tuned for pics.

Just thought I would clarify some terminology :blueangel:
There are two axle gears and two spider gears in the differential, the axle gears drive the axle (output) shafts and the spiders run in between them.
I really like the idea of moving the driver side axle gear over and building a new shaft for it . Good thinking :D
I also plan to rebuild my own when the time comes :yesnod:
Re: How to tear down a diff.....pics inside>:O) (Flyin'Brian)
Project:
You can see the spider gear on the right with the hardened output shaft. If you look into the differential you will see the 2 spider gears on the sides and one deep in the case. The spider gear in the case doesn't have a seperate shaft sticking out like the one on the right with the hardened output shaft. My project is to get another spider gear(like the one on the right) and install that in the bottom of the differential(refer to pic). I will have a machine shop make a new shaft to work with the newly positioned spider gear. If your wondering the spider gear located at the bottom of the pic is a one piece assembly with the passenger side output shaft. Hope this clears up everything.

I understand, but the gear on the hardened output shaft and the one deep in the case that broke are AXLE gears not spider gears.
The other two are the spiders.
Just wanted to make sure your calling them by the correct name :blueangel:
It's just a terminology thing :)
Re: How to tear down a diff.....pics inside>:O) (Phil97SVT)
You know I was just looking in the service manual, and they call the output gears (output gears) and the spiders (side gears).
I guess thats pretty simple huh :yesnod:
