C1287 code is the SWPS (steering wheel positioning sensor) going out. It is located on the steering shaft where it goes through the fire wall. How ever they do not make new ones any more for the 2000 and earlier cars. You might be able to find a used one from Marc at Vettenuts. He is a corvette recycle yard that should be able to find one for you. Good luck.

Not sure if you fixed this yet but I just replaced my SWPS on my '99 coupe yesterday. Not a hard job, I did it by myself with directions I got on here. Also ask around the forum and look at part out ads for a used SWPS. I got one for less than $130 and centered it myself before installing. I also went thru the driver's wheel well to gain access to the steering linkage which made it much easier. If you have any questions, shoot me a PM and I'll answer whatever I can.
