Hope this helps. I am still considering using the thermo-tech wrap through out the tunnel to cut down on heat.... I think it will have to be over the wheels if I do it. I used to run that stuff on some late 80s mustang headers, but never had any of the flaking that these guys spoke of.
They have a sheilding that you can attach to the inside of the tunnel.I'm not going the wrap the headers or the exhaust.I was figuring I could use this to reflect some of the heat back down.
I used the self adhesive ThermoTech material on the starter (it is very close to the pre-cats added on the 2001's), and the adhesive failed a short time later. I assume it got too hot, but it makes me wonder if the self adhesive stuff can take the higer temps that they claim it will. I did use some of it on the tunnel, but had just enough left to do the sides of the tunnel, covering the black panted metal frame rails adjacent to the exhaust pipes. It seems to stick fine there (must be lower temp), just make sure you clean the mounting surface with some solvent first. I intend to buy more of this material to cover the underside of the tunnel cover. It is much cheaper than the custom-cut thermal blanket availible for the tunnel cover ($340!!). I still need install a thermal sheild for the starter, I don't think the starter will live very long in C5's with the pre-cats!!
I have used Thermotech on several cars including my 01 ZO6. I wrapped the exhaust system from the cats back to the mufflers to reduce the heat radiated on th the trans and gear box during long road course events. It reduced the trans/diff temp by 7 degreesF and also has cut down on some of the interior heat as well although that was not my origional intention. I suspect that a layer of Thermotech inside the tunnel would be very effective. I would suggest you contact the Thermotech folks to get their recomendation as to which one of their products would be most appropiate. FYI I wrapped my exhaust with their header tape and then wrapped ss wire around the whole package to keep it all in place. So far its working very well. BTW insulating the exhaust system will add some hp but it also encreases thermal fatigue on the metal so it is a trade off of sorts. Its been my expirence that Thermotech makes good products and their tech support is knowledgable. Let us know how it works if you do it. Good luck. Oh one more thing, wear GOOD eye protection ( like goggles) and a long sleeved shirt. This stuff will eat you up if it gets you on or in you.
Excellent comments. Thank you. This is exactly what I am hoping to do... and then some.
Currently, my game plan is to get the pup cats cut and wrap from the manifold connector all the way to the mufflers in the rear using the header wrap.
I am trying to keep it cool in the tunnel and remove the need for the pup cats... I hear continually that the pups are there to heat up the exhaust for the main cats. I have even heard that the thermo-tech wrap cuts down on interior resonance, somewhat.
