Default module smoking

98 c5, borla exhaust and freeflow air filter.
got into car after work and service soon, abs and traction lights came on. working fine earlier that day. pulled to side to ck under hood and a cylinder shaped module behind the radiator was spewing smoke. car was off. strong electrical smell. finally stopped smoking. started car and drove 15 miles home. car runs fine but traction and abs lights still on as well as service soon. what was the part that burned up and what caused this. thx Clayton

Hey Clayton, after three years of membership I'm going to answer your question with a suggestion, pull your codes and report back to us what they are.

Having a difficult time envisioning what you described as what was smoking.. Was it the EBTCM????

ETBTCM: Left (drivers) side of the car directly behind the radiator and in front of the engine?

The only other electrical stuff behind the radiator are the FANs and the actual throttle body.

Any chance of a picture of the component??

Most likely has water inside the module. Remove the SIX torx screws and the two connectors and remove the electrical portion of the module..

Look for water,corrosion, moisture..

What year C5?

If 2001+ you can easily get a good used replacement.. Call VETTENUTS Recycling!!

MAKE SURE that you pry the module STRAIGHT off the BPMV to prevent breking the module coils:

New parts NO!!!

Used Parts YES!!

COST $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ A LOT!!

Your best bet is to separate the EBTCM from the BPMV and see what is having issues. Maybe its something that can be fixed. Maybe not.
