whine

In addition to checking for a worn wheel bearing it could possibly be tire related. If the tires are old (They should be replaced every five to seven years regardless of mileage & tread wear. Check the production date on the side wall) they could be hardening and producing a noise. It could have also gotten "out of round" or lost a balance weight. While most all of those instances typically produce a noticeable change in driving movements it wouldn't be completely unheard (pun pun hardy har har) of for a tire issue to produce a noise in a particular set driving condition.
Plus like a wheel bearing checking tires is pretty much free.
Having an automatic would make me sad also.
