When you go to activate the AC, have you been driving for awhile? I had a situation where I noticed the AC shut off after I had been driving around town awhile. Turns out my radiator was bad and the car was going into self preservation mode. I was shutting the car down prior to it reaching the reduced power and over heat messaging. Once I drove the car long enough, the other warnings finally kicked on.
If not your situation, the other suggestions are valid and good. Would be worth checking for debris in the radiator and AC coils.
Many an A/C shop will check your pressure for free -- but even an inexpensive do-it-yourself charging can will tell you what you need to know. Even with the motor off, static pressure should be around 75 psi or so. Any less and the system might engage, until the compressor kicks in and drops the pressure below the low pressure switch point.
