Default 98 -c5 engine valley - under intake, question

Hello All,

Pulled the intake off to change knock sensors. I noticed the front knock sensor had a lot of oil around it.. I am going to pull the valley cover plate and replace gasket and rubber rings, but to do so I need to remove the pipe line that is over the top of it... DO I need any gasket or orings for the reinstall of the pipe line?
I have the valley cover gasket and rubber rings for around the knock sensors but the kit did not have any gasket or orings for the pipe line... How does it seal?

Thanks,

Ant...

The steam pipes have a rubber o-ring type seal on them. These can be reused. Did you get a replacement set of intake manifold gaskets?

Recommendation to clean the valley cover area out as best as possible before removing the cover. Then clean the top surface carefully, don't want to drop any derbies into the cam.

Just did this on a 180k LS1 in a GTO this weekend, it had 14 years of crud and water damaged knock sensors. Replaced all the gaskets and knock sensors. Now to see if the knock sensor error is gone.

Awesome. Thank you for the reply.
yes I got new intake gaskets. Got the top of it all cleaned up pretty much. I'll run the vacuum over it again. Just to be on the safe side.

thanks.

I wouldn’t reuse the gaskets on the steam pipe. If they haven’t been done in that’s couple years, they will most likely be worn (compressed to the point of not resealing) or will year when removed.

Do it the simple way, buy 4 of the speak port gaskets, set of intake gaskets, and do the oil pressure sensor while there. No sense in not for the amount of time you have/will invested in the current repair.

You are correct... The orings are not gonna seal again.. They don't look good at all.. And one is completely gone... Where do I get the orings for this steam pipe??

Thanks,

You can get them from any Parts house now. Or the dealer or one of the online places. I typically use NAPA if not GM. Have been satisfied with NAPA stuff.

I found them at Napa. Thanks.... I also putt in a new radiator and water pump, got that done today. The lower hose is a pain in the A**.... Also replaced all the water hoses, Car has 120K on the clock so what the hell, Mine as well do it all while I'm in there.. So this way the cooling system is completely refreshed... Can't hurt... Should have it back together tomorrow...

Thanks,
