I've got a 2004 LeMans commemorative, I would like to remove the mass airflow sensor to clean it. Is it necessary to disconnect the negative battery terminal to do this and if so why.
Whenever unplugging electrical connection its a good idea to disconnect the battery. The reason being is when you go to plug/unplug a connection with the battery connected it will cause an arc that can damage the component. There are fuses that should protect this from happening. Sometimes things don't work like they should. So unhooking the battery eliminates this from being a potential problem. That being said I have plug/unplugged components many times without problems.
As long as it's not running and the key isn't in the ignition it's perfectly safe to unplug the MAF sensor to clean it. CRC MAF cleaner is the best cleaner to use, just don't use carb/throttle body cleaner.
This is a real easy job, just did it last weekend. Disconnect the connection, loosed the two large clamps and remove. Spray (without) touching the little wires inside. Spray for three seconds...and repeat.
Replace the two large clamps and reconnect the connector.

That should do it.
The ball buster
Use MAF cleaner spray and do not touch the little wires.
Thats what I purchased at Walmart a couple of weeks ago.
Best bang for your buck.
On a side note: I was SURPRISED how much carbon build-up was around the throttle blade before i cleaned it.
Once cleaning was done on both MAS and TB i noticed a huge difference in throttle response.

Also did both ...the throttle body and the MAS. Much smoother idle and throttle response.
