Jumping on this thread. I have the same problem. Bought the car used, has 113k on it. Appears to have 3.90 gears and possibly RPM diff..... not sure though. Changed the fluid yesterday, no change in sound. Was pretty dark. Most pronounced in 5th and 6th with throttle. goes away when I lift off the gas. Assuming its the diff, but can hear it by the shifter.... could be trans, but might just be transmitting the sound from the diff to the trans....

Just left the shop. He wanted to bill 25 hours for a change. I told him he’s funny and took my keys and left.

Which one did you order if you don't mind me asking? I'm sure I'll be ordering one soon also. Thanks

I ordered the stage 2, 3.73. I was going to go with the 3.90 but they didnt have it in stock so he said 4-6 weeks and I wasnt waiting that long for it. So I decided to go with the 3.73's

He said its a 2 week build time, then shipping. So hopefully I can get the car in the shop in about 2.5 weeks. Until them I'll keep driving it here and there and hope the diff doesnt blow up on me.

BWAHAHAHA can you imagine if someone said that to change the fluid. Thats the easiest fluid change anyone will ever do.

And yeah it was nuts. Found a guy with a home garage thats going to cost 3-500. So yeah the diff is being sent to him.

I'm reading this because I have the same problem. I'm thinking it may also be the transmission. When I'm driving and shifting from 3rd to 4th and the clutch is in, I hear the same whine as the synchros engage and then when in gear it is silent until I engage clutch and press throttle. Very weird. My mechanic tells me he didn't see any signs of chipping or breaking when he opened the rear case of the diff. I will get a second opinion, hopefully next week. I'm thinking to just buy a transmission and diff together because I might as well if the specialist shop I go to charges me 1,000 just to diagnose it.

My car also has an intermittent whine. Sometimes it is long and steady other times it is high pitched and shrill. It is loudest when I accelerate briskly.

I can't figure it out, but every time my wife gets out of the car the noise seems to disappear.

Just picked the car up from the diff swap and it’s nice to hear my exhaust again.

But the guy guy said it was a bitch of a swap so just know that if you are doing it yourself.

Also so he said he did a tranny fluid change. At 78k miles he said the fluid was black, so I think you should make sure to check the fluid while you are doing everything else.

I changed both the fluid in the diff and the tranny. Tranny was not bright red but kind of brownish.... noise is not any quieter with new fluid. I'm still debating putting in a stock 3.42 diff that I have laying around. The car just blows the tires off in 1st and 2nd now anyway, so I don't think I "need" the 3.90s for it as its supposed to be a daily driver.

Mine is definitely turned on and off by tip in on the throttle so I'm HOPING its the diff.
